Is your kid smart but seems like they’re not trying? Avoiding the table, easily distracted, resisting math specifically? There may be more going on than motivation. It took me until halfway through fourth grade to realize what was actually happening with my oldest son — and the answer wasn’t effort. It was math fact fluency. Here’s what did and didn’t work for us.
I’m Maryellen. I homeschool in a neurodivergent family, and I share real strategies for families navigating ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other learning differences. My own mother and sister both had math struggles growing up — one is now an advanced practice nurse, the other a paralegal. Both found their own way. I share that so you can breathe a little easier: your child will too.
Our Math Story
I didn’t realize there was a problem until halfway through fourth grade. It wasn’t that my son couldn’t do the math — he could always get to the answer eventually — so I kept moving forward. But once we hit multi-digit multiplication, the avoidance ramped up fast. He was harder to get to the table, easily distracted, and clearly resisting. One day it clicked: he was burning enormous brain power just to solve one problem, because his math facts weren’t automatic.
What We Tried First: Times Tales
A friend’s daughter had done well with Times Tales, a story-based multiplication program, so we gave it a try. My son loved the stories, and we made good progress. But once we returned to our regular curriculum, he was still slow — now he was recalling the story before he could get to the math, which added an entire extra mental step instead of removing one. It didn’t work for us long-term; he still didn’t have math fact fluency. Though, it’s worth trying if story-based memory tricks click for your kid and they can get there quickly.
Going Back to Basics: Math-U-See AIM
Eventually we took a big step back and used the Math-U-See AIM curriculum, while also moving all the way from halfway through fourth grade back to second-grade concepts. That feels discouraging in the moment — like you’ll never catch up — but if there are foundational gaps, you’re just treading water until you fill them. Once he achieved math fact fluency in addition and subtraction with the AIM curriculum, worked through rounding and place value in Math-U-See Beta, the rest moved quickly because his math facts were already solid. We’ve been catching up at roughly a grade and a half per year since.
Why Math Fact Fluency Matters More Than People Think
Math facts aren’t really the point of math — they’re the tool that makes everything after them easier. When a kid has to stop and calculate 7 + 8 every single time, there’s little working memory left for the actual concept, especially in multi-step and word problems. Fluency isn’t about speed for its own sake. It’s about clearing space in the brain. Once my son had his facts down, we moved through curriculum content noticeably faster.
Three Ways to Know Where Your Kid Is
Math interventions look different for every kid, so start by figuring out which of these three categories fits when assessing math fact fluency:
- Haven’t memorized the facts yet. If they’re past first grade and into second and still not solidifying addition and subtraction, it’s worth pausing to build that foundation before moving on. Not every kid will fully memorize every fact — but it’s worth a real effort first. Especially, if lessons are taking longer, or your getting any resistance behaviors from your child.
- Know the facts but retrieval is slow. This is where flashcards and a tracker as a daily warm-up make the biggest difference.
- Know the facts and just need maintenance. Some neurodivergent kids and kids with learning differences often need repetition even after they “know” something, or the recall fades. A quick warm-up before lessons keeps facts sharp.
Remediation Programs Worth Trying for Math Fact Fluency
Two remediation programs have worked well in our house. The Math-U-See AIM curriculum (addition/subtraction and multiplication/division versions) uses multisensory activities — touch, hearing, sight — which research shows helps build automaticity. It comes with games, activities, and its own flashcard-and-tracking system.
Kate Snow’s Math Facts That Stick series is another favorite — quick and easy for the parent to follow, with a game each day followed by a worksheet, since writing information down also helps lock it into memory. The one thing it’s missing is flashcards, so I add a flashcard warm-up using the facts already covered as we go.
The Math Fact Fluency Tracker
I track progress with a simple fact-family tracker: checkboxes under each fact that gets marked once my child answers it correctly in under three seconds. Each of my kids has their own. It’s a quick way to see exactly what’s solid and what still needs warm-up practice — and it’s part of the same system I use in the flashcard method below.
The Flashcard Method
Here’s the exact low-pressure method we use as a daily warm-up, with the Think Tank Scholar flashcards:
- Set a timer for 2–5 minutes, depending on the kid and the day. (Do what your child tolerates — 1 minute, 5 cards, 10.)
- Go the full time, or stop after three to five wrong answers (fewer if your child dysregulates easily around mistakes).
- For correct answers: praise specifically, have them check the fact off their tracker, and say the full equation out loud again.
- For incorrect answers: show it (build with manipulatives or draw it), write it while saying it out loud, then say it again in a silly voice — robot, whisper, shout, whatever’s fun for that kid.
- Correct cards go to the back of the deck; missed cards go to the front, so you review the hardest ones first next time.
If a kid gets too dysregulated by the correction step, skip it — just move the card to the front of the deck without comment, and revisit it another day with something low-key like, “Hey, we’re going to build this one today.” Keep the whole thing positive. This is meant to be a warm-up, not the main event.
Additionally, if you have multiple kids or don’t want to invest in flashcards, that’s okay. Instead, grab index cards and each learner can make their own flashcards. This is a great multisensory task in itself. Encourage them to say the numbers as they write!
When It’s Still Not Clicking
A math fact reference chart can be a good scaffold for kids who are afraid of mistakes, or for kids who can handle higher-level math but just can’t retain the facts no matter what you’ve tried. Many kids do eventually pick up most facts through continued exposure over time, especially the ones they reach for often — but if it’s truly not fair to keep them stuck at a lower level, the chart lets them move forward. And if you’ve tried multiple remediation programs with no movement, it may be time for an evaluation with a specialist or tutor who knows this territory well. Outsourcing isn’t giving up.
Keep It Short, Keep It Positive
Short sessions. Genuine praise for what they get right. No big deal made over what they miss. Make it silly, make it a game — gamifying works well for a lot of neurodivergent kids (though not all, so read your kid). And stop before they dysregulate. Once a kid is dysregulated, nobody’s learning anything, and it gets harder to get them back to the table next time.
Homeschooling gives us the chance to actually meet our kids where they are. Find where that is, keep it low-pressure, and let the tools do the work.
