The Georgia GAMMIS portal is where you manage your child’s Medicaid information online — and if you just got Katie Beckett approved, logging in for the first time is one of the first things you’ll want to do. This guide walks you through how to get in, what you can see and do once you’re there, and a few tips that will save you a headache.
Note: I’m a parent sharing what worked for our family. This is not legal or medical advice. Policies change—always confirm details with official Georgia Medicaid/GAMMIS sources.

What Is the Georgia GAMMIS Portal?
GAMMIS stands for Georgia Medicaid Management Information System. The parent-facing side of it lives at mmis.georgia.gov (you may also see it referenced as gammis.georgia.gov — both work). It’s the online portal where you can view and manage your child’s Georgia Medicaid information.
Once your child is approved for Katie Beckett or any Georgia Medicaid program, this portal becomes your home base for checking coverage details, tracking claims, and managing your account.
How to Log In to the Georgia GAMMIS Portal for the First Time
The first login is the trickiest part — but once you’re in, it’s straightforward. Here’s how it works:
- Go to mmis.georgia.gov
- Click the Login button
- When it asks for a password, click the option that says you need help or don’t have one — it will direct you to the Gainwell Help Desk link
- Call the Gainwell Help Desk number. You may be rerouted a few times — be patient and stay on the line until you reach someone who can help with the technical side
- Your username is your child’s Medicaid ID number
- The Help Desk will give you a one-time password — write it down on paper before doing anything else. Don’t just copy it to your clipboard. When you go to set your new password, the system will ask for the one-time password again — and if you’ve since copied and pasted your Medicaid number to use as your username, it will overwrite whatever was on your clipboard and you’ll no longer have the one-time password accessible.
- Type in the one-time password, then set your own permanent password
- Log back in with your new password and you’re in
Pro tip: Ask the Help Desk representative to stay on the line while you complete the login setup. It’s a pain to call back and get rerouted again if something doesn’t work on the first try.
What You Can Do in the Georgia GAMMIS Portal
Once you’re logged in, here’s what’s available:
- Check your child’s effective date — this is the date Medicaid coverage begins, which matters for backdating claims
- View care providers — see which providers are on file
- View claims — see what has been billed to Medicaid
- Request a new Medicaid card — if your card is lost or never arrived
- View and download notices — including renewal letters and determination notices
- Send messages — communicate with the Medicaid office through the portal
- Upload documents — submit supporting documentation when needed
Finding Your Effective Date & Backdating Claims
Once you’re logged in, scroll to the bottom of your account page to find your child’s effective date — this is when Medicaid coverage officially started. It may go back further than you think.
Once you have that date, call your care providers and give it to them. Ask each provider whether they can file claims going back to that effective date. Many providers can — which means you may be reimbursed for services you already paid out of pocket during the approval process.
Important: Whenever you call the Medicaid line or speak with a billing department, ask for a reference number for the call. Write it down and pass it along to your provider — it can help if there are any billing questions later.
Tips & Common Issues
Save your login info somewhere secure. Once you get in, don’t lose that username and password. Your username is your child’s Medicaid ID number — keep that handy.
Download important PDFs. Notices, determination letters, and renewal reminders show up in the portal. Download and save them — don’t rely on the portal to always have them accessible.
Card never arrived? Request a new one directly through the portal, or call the Katie Beckett office. After my son’s approval, his card never came in the mail. When I called, the caseworker told me there was a glitch in the system that a supervisor needed to clear before the card could be issued. It got resolved, but I had to call to find out — it wouldn’t have fixed itself.
Always tell providers about your secondary insurance. Many providers default to billing your primary insurance only unless you specifically tell them your child also has Medicaid as a secondary. Mention it at every appointment until it’s firmly in your file.
HIPP Program: Get Reimbursed for Your Insurance Premium
Once your child qualifies for Katie Beckett, you may also be eligible for the Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) program. HIPP can reimburse you for the premium you’re paying on your primary private insurance — for our family that’s over $500 a month, so it’s worth looking into.
Important to know: qualifying for Katie Beckett does not automatically make you eligible for HIPP. You have to apply separately and submit additional documentation beyond what’s included in the KB packet. I have a full video walking through the HIPP application process, and I’ll be sharing more as I go through it myself.
For more information on HIPP, contact the Georgia Medicaid office: 1-800-766-4456
FAQs
What is the GAMMIS portal URL? Go to mmis.georgia.gov or gammis.georgia.gov — both take you to the same place.
What is my username for GAMMIS? Your child’s Medicaid ID number is your username.
What if I can’t get through to the Gainwell Help Desk? You may be rerouted several times — this is normal. Stay patient, stay on the line, and ask specifically for someone who can help with website login technical issues. Once you reach the right person it goes quickly.
Can I use GAMMIS to check my child’s renewal date? Yes — your effective date and coverage period are visible in the portal. This is one of the most useful things to check so you don’t miss a renewal window.
What if my child’s card never arrives after approval? Log into GAMMIS and request a new card, or call the Katie Beckett office directly at 678-248-7449. There can sometimes be a system glitch that delays card issuance — calling gets it resolved.
Should I switch providers to ones that accept Medicaid? Not necessarily right away. Many families keep their current providers and use Katie Beckett Medicaid as secondary insurance. You may need to decide over time whether switching makes sense based on what your providers will and won’t bill.
